Whenever we pick up the cards to do a reading for either ourselves or others we face the reality that this might hurt, so never has a tarot deck had a more apt title! The This Might Hurt Tarot is a deck that honours the Rider-Waite tradition, while embracing modernity and diversity. Moving away from the idealised imagery of slim, white, and straight people, the This Might Hurt Tarot is inclusive, showing disabled people, people of colour, LGBTQA+ people, and elderly people... in other words the people who are often absent in our popular media (and many early tarot decks) except to serve as foils to our slim, white, straight main characters. In the words of the decks creator, Isabella Rotman "There are disabled people, fat people, brown people, Black people, gay people, trans people, people who dye their hair and ride scooters and have big thighs and are covered in tattoos". The artist and author is also at pains to address the issue of gender and the tarot. In the deck she defines masculine and feminine qualities as a set of traits; man or woman refers to the gender of the character in the card, but not necessarily their biological sex.
