Ciro Marchetti has established a fine reputation as a tarot and Lenormand deck illustrator. His imaginative images are rich in colour and have a distinctive style that make them immediately recognisable. The Mystic Palette Tarot is Marchettis latest offering and as always gives interesting interpretations of traditional tarot images. This deck did not, according to the artist, start out with any particular destination in mind it evolved organically over a period of time, and the finished product is a collection of images that made the cut. The resulting deck is one that pays homage to classic tarot decks, particularly the Rider Waite Smith, but offers a fresh take on those images. Marchetti goes to great pains to explain that he is not trying to reinvent the wheel, but does question the rigidity with which traditionalists adhere to the minutia of tarot symbols. Is every detail deliberately intended, or are some just personal quirks of the original artist?
