The Canon's read
Tarot Canon's own assessment, written for this catalog.
Elaine Moertl started drawing ferret cards as a fun project, and the ferrets multiplied, as ferrets do, into a full seventy-eight card pen-and-ink deck, self-published in a limited edition of five hundred. The premise sounds like a joke and lands as a philosophy: the deck genuinely commits to the ferret's perspective, and the ferret's perspective, curious, chaotic, fearless, endlessly investigating, turns out to be a legitimate reading of the Fool's whole journey.
Pen-and-ink keeps the register intimate, closer to a sketchbook than a production, which suits a deck whose origin was affection rather than ambition. Five hundred copies makes it a genuine rarity now, the kind of indie artifact that surfaces in collections and forum trades rather than shops. It suits ferret people beyond all argument, small-animal households generally, collectors of limited indie decks, and readers who believe whimsy and insight are the same faculty. Solemn esotericists should scamper along; this deck would only chew their shoelaces.
