The record
Woman-led or feminine-centred tarots have been around for a while now. Early decks included the Daughters of the Moon Tarot and the Motherpeace Tarot both round decks that were first published in the 1980s. Recently there has been an upswing in woman-centred tarot decks and the beautiful Black Violet Tarot is part of that trend. Created and illustrated by Heidi Phelps as she navigated her way through both the ending of life, as her mother succumbed to cancer, and the creation of life as she underwent fertility treatment in order to conceive her first child the Black Violet Tarot taps into the power of these beginnings and endings. These are without doubt some of the major themes that run through tarot decks joy and grief, loss, and the rebirth of the soul. Working without tarot police telling what she should and shouldnt do Heidi Phelps approached her illustrations intuitively and used her artistic acumen to steer a course through her grief at losing her mother and her delight in the birth of her child. Creating the Black Violet Tarot helped her come to terms with the enormous changes being wrought in her life. The Black Violet Tarot is loosely based on the Rider Waite Smi
