Fairytales, myths, legends, and folklore are part of every culture - we learn them as children, they are taught in schools, they are part of the structure of many of the stories we tell ourselves as novels, as movies, and through other mediums such as the visual arts and music. They are some of the oldest stories known to mankind. They teach us about love, desire, and death, loss, sorrow, joy, poverty and wealth. They teach us about overcoming challenges, and offer us hope, will rules for living, that good can overcome evil, and show us what transformation looks like. Fairytales sift through our darkest fears and true horrors, but the violence is contained and never spills over into our actual lives. They tell us that anything is possible; we can rise from the direst poverty to rule a kingdom on our wits alone, or that our beauty can be perceived by someone wonderful, and in spite of our humble background. Fairytales are so powerful that we rewrite them and reinfection them over and over again.
