Adornment is part and parcel of being human... the drive to express ourselves, define our status and cultural identity, to express our personal identity, to enhance our beauty, to invoke our gods, and define our wrongdoers has been with us since at least Neolithic times. Tattoos have been found on mummies ranging from ancient Egypt, Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and far east. Otzi the iceman who died in approximately 3105 BCE had a total of 61 tattoos. Contemporaneous Egyptian mummies, particularly women who were priestesses, have also been found with complex and beautiful tattoos. In many indigenous societies tattooing is used to mark rites of passage and achievement, as well as for purposes of self-expression. While tattoos were also once seen as belonging to certain classes of people such as sailors and criminals, these days there is no limit to who gets what kind of art tattooed on them. The traditional style of tattooing (classically associated with sailors) has strong outlines and heavy black shading with bold, solid colours.
