Let’s start in the obvious place - what is Sufism? Please note that for the purposes of this review and due to the complexity of the subject matter I will be discussing Sufism in the broadest possible terms... Sufism at its root is a form of Islamic mysticism. Early in Islamic history Sufism appeared in an area of present-day Saudia Arabia. It evolved into many orders under the tutelage of Sufi masters, whose teachings continue to this day. Sufism spread throughout the East and gradually moved toward the West. In the 20th century Sufi author Idries Shah (among others) popularised Sufism in the west. Shah published many books of what could be termed reformed Sufism – that is, it followed his doctrine that information is best absorbed when it is adjusted for time and place. Sufism is often defined as undefinable but, grasping at straws here, we can call it a system of thought, a form of psychology, and a path to human development and enlightenment. The Sufi Tarot seeks to build a bridge between 2 distinct forms of mysticism – the tarot and Sufism.
