Oshun the golden beauty is a beloved and powerful Orisha in the Yoruba spiritual tradition which is centred in Nigeria and Benin. In the West she is most familiar as Ochun in Santeria/La Regla Lucumi in Cuba, and Oxum in Brazilian Candomble. She has many other names including Osun, Laketi, and Yalode, and she is worshipped and honoured in many traditions including Shango, 21 Divisions Winti, Voudou, and African-American Folk Magic. Orishas are a little difficult to define, because they are not quite gods or deities, at least as we know them. They can be seen as exceptionally powerful spirits, supernatural powers that spring from nature, they are asé incarnate – the energy of life (similar to qi/chi in concept). Oshun is the clear, fresh, sweet waters from lakes and rivers, and she rules over love, beauty, fertility, motherhood, prosperity and wealth, compassion, and confidence. Orishas all have their own favourite colours, animals, objects and symbols. The colours appear in the patterns of sacred necklaces and the clothing that the orishas favour.
