The Canon's read

Tarot Canon's own assessment, written for this catalog.

The Darkana Tarot comes from the Inappropriate Tarot Readings community, Janden Hale's grunge-dark indie deck with an extra major arcana card the record preserves with appropriate reverence: the Badass. Seventy-nine cards of alternative attitude, the deck built for the reading style its parent community practiced, irreverent, profane and frequently more honest than politeness allows, the Dirty Tarot's spiritual cousin with a distressed-texture aesthetic. The Badass card is the deck's thesis in one addition: where the Happy Squirrel jokes about tarot's pretensions, the Badass expands its personnel, an office the traditional deck arguably always needed. Community-born decks carry their scene's voice authentically, which is their value and their filter. It suits the irreverent-reading constituency, indie-community historians, extra-card collectors filing it beside the Squirrel and the Artist, and readers whose questions deserve a deck that swears back. The reverent have most of the tradition; the Badass, characteristically, is fine with that.
