Kathleen McCormack's deck through Barron's Educational does exactly what its unglamorous name promises: a seventy-eight card tarot built for learning, from a publisher whose whole catalog is study aids. That publishing context is the interesting part. By the mid-1990s tarot had become mainstream enough for an educational-textbook house to treat it like French verbs or the SAT, something a general reader might simply decide to learn, and this deck is that moment in cardboard. Purpose-built beginner decks make a real trade: maximum clarity in exchange for the depth that rewards years of rereading, and the honest advice is to accept the trade knowingly.
