Minchiate is tarot's more complicated cousin, and the archive dates the variant to around the sixteenth century, roughly a hundred years after tarot itself is commonly accepted to have started in fifteenth-century northern Italy. Where a standard tarot carries twenty-two major arcana, this Minchiate variant, credited to Pietro Alligo, carries forty-one, nearly double what a typical reader would expect walking in. That expansion is the reason Minchiate decks exist as a separate category rather than a tarot variant in name only: more trumps means a more elaborate hierarchy and a different reading experience, not a reskin of the familiar 78. A deck this different rewards readers who already know standard tarot well enough to notice what changed, since half the interest here is comparative. Coming to it as a first deck would mean learning an unusual card count before learning tarot's fundamentals at all, a harder route in than most readers want. Historians of tarot's early variants and collectors chasing Minchiate specifically get the most from this one.
